Different Tobacco Types Used for Pipes

 

The tobacco you purchase online or from your local shop is a mixture of tobaccos from different parts of the globe. Smoking accessories distributors in Ontario have found that tobacco blenders will apply various types of leaves for producing distinctive flavors, mouthfeel, and burn rates. 

 

The concept is similar to the winemakers who all blend varietals to develop unique flavors. Brewers add malt and hop to alter the flavor of a beer. Similarly, tobacco blenders apply the same methodology with the following leaves: 

 

• Burley: Slow burner featuring a nutty, comparatively mild flavor.  

• Virginia: Naturally light and sweet, it burns faster and produces a nice flavor to your smoke.

• Perique: A Louisiana-based leaf with spicy notes.

By the completion of the process, a few blenders include alcohol, such as rum to boost up the flavor. By the time the tobacco is packaged, the alcohol is burned off and moisture levels are back to normal. 

 

Non-Aromatics 

 

If you wish to move beyond the sweet-smelling Danish Gold, then you can opt for a blend called Highlander, which is a combination of non-aromatic English tobacco and aromatics of the Cavendish variety. As the name suggests, non-aromatic tobacco is devoid of any casing. As non-aromatics tend to feature an extremely strong taste, they’re toned down with highly favorable aromatics. 

 

Storing Your Tobacco 

 

Whatever you select, you must know the process to store your blends. Air-tight containers are important as long-term exposure to air may dry out your tobacco. If you opt for flip-top lids lined with a rubber gasket, then it’ll work well. 

 

If you have a dry fistful of tobacco, wet a washcloth totally, ring it out till no water drips out. Now, set it across the opening of your jar. Close the lid as best as you can and allow it to sit for six or seven hours. Many go 12 hours or dump their leaf in a bowl and cover it with a wet towel. However, if you leave the towel on too long, your tobacco may mold. 

 

Choosing Your Tobacco 

 

There's no thumb rule for choosing the right tobacco.
